Active ‘Patriot’ Groups in the United States in 2009

The Intelligence Project identified 512 "Patriot" groups that were active in 2009. Of these groups, 127 were militias, marked with an asterisk, and the remainder includes "common-law" courts, publishers, ministries and citizens’ groups. Generally, Patriot groups define themselves as opposed to the "New World Order," engage in groundless conspiracy theorizing, or advocate or adhere to extreme antigovernment doctrines. Listing here does not imply that the groups themselves advocate or engage in violence or other criminal activities, or are racist. The list was compiled from field reports, Patriot publications, the Internet, law enforcement sources and news reports. Groups are identified by the city, county or region where they are located.

St. Gabriel the Achangel (the "Strength of God") appeared to the blessed Virgin Mary, saying "Hail, full of grace!" and announced to her the incarnation of the Son of God.

Gabriel instructed Daniel (Daniel 8:16), though he is not called an angel, but "the man Gabriel" (9:21). The same heavenly spirit announced the birth of St. John the Baptist and the Incarnation of the Redeemer, while tradition ascribes to him both the message to the shepherds (Luke 2:9), and the most glorious mission of all, that of strengthening the King of Angels in His Agony (Luke 22:43).

St. Augustine says: "’Angel’ is the name of their office, not of their nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is ‘spirit’; if you seek the name of their office, it is ‘angel.’" With their whole beings the angels are servants and messengers of God. Because they "always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven" they are the "mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word." As purely spiritual creatures angels have intelligence and will: they are personal and immortal creatures, surpassing in perfection all visible creatures, as the splendor of their glory bears witness. It was God who created all things, both “visible and invisible.” As his heavenly host, the angelic spirits form a part of the great invisible portion of the cosmos referenced in the Nicene Creed.

The angels were created in vast numbers by God before he made humans. They are separate from humans. They were made without gender, do not procreate, and never die or cease to exist. While normally invisible, they can assume a physical form to carry out the mission God gives them. Sometimes humans are granted the vision to see them. The angelic spirits are arranged in a hierarchy of form and function. While the angels are pure spirits of consciousness and will as is God, they are not omnipotent, omniscient, nor omnipresent like God. Yet, the angels do have abilities far above even the saints in heaven.
The number of the angels is frequently stated as vast—“thousands upon thousands”, innumerable angels” (Daniel 7:10; Apocalypse 5:11; Psalm 67:18; Matthew 26:53). From the use of the word host (sabbaoth) as a synonym for the heavenly army it is hard to resist the impression that the term "Lord of Hosts" refers to God’s Supreme command of the angelic multitude (cf. Deuteronomy 33:2; 32:43). There is a difficulty is speaking of angels in terms of numbers. We count people by their bodies. How do we count angels? They have no bodies to count. They are distinct by their intellect, character, and will. Aquinas argued that each angel was its own species.

As the prince of the seraphim, St. Michael the Archangel (meaning "Who is like unto God?") led the heavenly host in the battle against the rebelling spirits.

" ‘But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come." While he was saying this to me, I bowed with my face toward the ground and was speechless. Then one who looked like a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, ‘I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I am helpless. How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.’ Again the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength. ‘Do not be afraid, O man highly esteemed,’ he said. ‘Peace! Be strong now; be strong.’ When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, ‘Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.’ So he said, ‘Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come; but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince’ " (Daniel 10:13-21).

HOLY MICHAEL, ARCHANGEL, defend us in the day of battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust down to hell Satan and all wicked spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
O prince most glorious, Michael the Archangel, keep us in remembrance: here and everywhere, always, entreat the Son of God for us.

St. Raphael the Archangel (the "Remedy of God") healed Tobit and delivered Tobiah’s wife from demonic obsession (see the Book of Tobit). "The angel Raphael (Tobit 12:12) says: "I offered thy prayer to the Lord." Raphael is also commonly associated with the angelic trembling of the waters in the pool of Bethesda (John 5:2-4).

Throughout the Bible we find it repeatedly implied that each individual soul has its guardian angel. Thus Abraham, when sending his steward to seek a wife for Isaac, says: "He will send His angel before thee" (Genesis 24:7). The words of the ninetieth Psalm which the devil quoted to our Lord (Matthew 4:6) are well known, and Judith accounts for her heroic deed by saying: "As the Lord liveth, His angel hath been my keeper" (13:20). These passages and many like them (Genesis 16:6-32; Hosea 12:4; 1 Kings 19:5; Acts 12:7; Psalm 33:8), though they will not of themselves demonstrate the doctrine that every individual has his appointed guardian angel, receive their complement in our Saviour’s words:
"See that you despise not one of these little ones; for I say to you that their angels in Heaven always see the face of My Father Who is in Heaven" (Matthew 18:10). These are words which illustrate the remark of St. Augustine: "What lies hidden in the Old Testament, is made manifest in the New." St. Jerome in his commentary on Mt 18:10 wrote: "The dignity of a soul is so great, that each has a guardian angel from its birth."
The general doctrine that the angels are our appointed guardians is considered to be a point of faith, but that each individual member of the human race has his own individual guardian angel is not of faith (de fide); the view has, however, strong and consistent support from the Doctors of the Church.

In her liturgy, the Church joins with the angels to adore the thrice-holy God. She invokes their assistance in the funeral liturgy’s In Paradisum deducant te angeli:
Into paradise may the angels lead thee;
and at thy coming may the martyrs receive thee,
and bring thee into the holy city Jerusalem.
From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. "Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life." The Bible represents the angels not only as our guardians, but also as actually interceding for us. Indeed, the book of Tobit provides the perfect example.

St. Uriel the Archangel (the "Light of God") is the guardian of the sun and of knowledge.
Devotion to the angels is thoroughly biblical. Perhaps the earliest explicit declaration of it is to be found in St. Ambrose’s words: "We should pray to the angels who are given to us as guardians." The church has always condemned the worship of angels (or anything else other than God alone). Devotion to the angels must be governed by Christian tradition. We should not invoke the manifestation of angels as spirit guides (New Age) as it invites demons disguised as angels. “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11:13-14)
The Church Fathers taught that it is the angels who put into execution God’s law regarding the physical world. The Jews believed that all the orderly harmony of the universe, as well as interruptions of that harmony, were due to God as their originator, but were carried out by his ministers. This view is strongly marked in the "Book of Jubilees" where the heavenly host of good and evil angels is every interfering in the material universe. Jewish philosopher and Torah scholar Maimonides is quoted by St. Thomas Aquinas as holding that the Bible frequently terms the powers of nature angels, since they manifest the omnipotence of God.

These hosts of heaven are ordered in what we commonly call the “nine choirs of angels.” These are divided into three triads (groups of three). The first angelic triad continually worships God in his immediate presence. These spirits consist of the exalted love of the fiery seraphim, the complete intuition of the cherubim, and the perfect power of the thrones. The primary function of their being is the perpetual adoration and praise of the divine substance. The second triad extends this divine praise and love to the creation. The spiritual dominions, princedoms, and powers execute the love, knowledge, and power of God relative to the general structure, order, and governance of the cosmos. The last triad serves the divine love towards human beings when the virtues, the ruling archangels, and the angels come to serve and care for people on earth. Angels then truly become “messengers” (angeloi in Greek) of divine favor. It was the Archangel Gabriel who gave the message of the Incarnation to the blessed Virgin Mary.
Overall, the heavenly hierarchy moves from the freedom and might of contemplative adoration (by the seraphim, cherubim, and thrones) through principled order and sovereignty (ruled by the dominions, princedoms, and powers) to active service toward others in a spirit of compassion and care (exercised by the virtues, archangels, and angels). The earthly life was designed to follow this cosmic harmony. We were created to enjoy complete and perfect goodness in returning thanks to the source of our happiness. Our worship must mirror heaven. The fullness of our being is to join in the heavenly chorus which forever sings: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty” (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8). Inspired by his love, we must also care for the creation entrusted to us, and reach out to others in service.

After Adam’s fall Paradise is guarded against our First Parents by cherubim who are clearly God’s ministers, though nothing is said of their nature. “So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.” (Genesis 3:23-24)
Only once again do the cherubim figure in the Bible, viz., in Ezekiel’s marvelous vision, where they are described at great length (Ezekiel 1), and are actually called cherubs in Ezekiel 10.
"In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God. On the fifth of the month—it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin–the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians. There the hand of the LORD was upon him. I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal, and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was that of a man, but each of them had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze. Under their wings on their four sides they had the hands of a man. All four of them had faces and wings, and their wings touched one another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved. Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a man, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out upward; each had two wings, one touching the wing of another creature on either side, and two wings covering its body. Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went. The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it. The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning. As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like chrysolite, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not turn about as the creatures went. Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around. When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked like an expanse, sparkling like ice, and awesome. Under the expanse their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty, like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings. Then there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. Above the expanse over their heads was what looked like a throne of sapphire, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking" (Ezekiel 1).
The Ophanim are one of a class of celestial beings described in the Book of Enoch with the Cherubim and Seraphim as never sleeping, but watching (or guarding) the throne of God. The word ophan means "wheel" in Hebrew so the Ophanim have been associated with the description in Ezekiel 1:15-21 and possibly again in the Daniel 7:9 (mentioned as gagal, traditionally "the wheels of gagallin", in "fiery flame" and "burning fire") of the four, eye-covered wheels (each composed of two nested wheels), that move next to the winged Cherubim, beneath the throne of God. The four wheels move with the Cherubim because the spirit of the Cherubim is in them. These are also referred to as the "many-eyed ones" in the Second Book of Enoch.
The Ophanim are also equated as the "Thrones", associated with the "Wheels", in the vision of Daniel 7:9. They are the carriers of the throne of God, hence the name. Traditionally, they are identified with the same Thrones (Gr. thronos) mentioned by St. Paul of Tarsus in Colossians 1:16.

The seraphim explicitly appear only in the vision of Isaiah 6 and are mentioned as the heavenly creatures nearest to the throne of God, who "is a consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29). Seraphim literally means "burning ones" in the Hebrew.
"In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphim: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, ‘Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.’ And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, ‘Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.’ Then flew one of the seraphim unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, ‘Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.’ Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then said I, ‘Here am I; send me’ " (Isaiah 6:1-8).
The Seraphim are also likely referred to in Revelation 4:4-8, where they are forever in God’s presence and praising Him constantly: "Day and night with out ceasing they sing: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.’"
Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite in his Celestial Hierarchy, helped fix the fiery nature of seraphim in the medieval imagination. It is here that the Seraphim are described as being concerned with keeping Divinity in perfect order, and not limited to chanting the trisagion. Taking his cue from writings in the Rabbinic tradition, the author gave an etymology for the Seraphim as "those who kindle or make hot." He wrote, "The name seraphim clearly indicates their ceaseless and eternal revolution about Divine Principles, their heat and keenness, the exuberance of their intense, perpetual, tireless activity, and their elevative and energetic assimilation of those below, kindling them and firing them to their own heat, and wholly purifying them by a burning and all-consuming flame; and by the unhidden, unquenchable, changeless, radiant and enlightening power, dispelling and destroying the shadows of darkness."
St. Thomas Aquinas in his Summa Theologiae offers a description of the nature of the Seraphim:
"The name ‘Seraphim’ does not come from charity only, but from the excess of charity, expressed by the word ardor or fire. Hence Dionysius (Coel. Hier. vii) expounds the name ‘Seraphim’ according to the properties of fire, containing an excess of heat. Now in fire we may consider three things. First, the movement which is upwards and continuous. This signifies that they are borne inflexibly towards God.Secondly, the active force which is ‘heat,’ which is not found in fire simply, but exists with a certain sharpness, as being of most penetrating action, and reaching even to the smallest things, and as it were, with superabundant fervor; whereby is signified the action of these angels, exercised powerfully upon those who are subject to them, rousing them to a like fervor, and cleansing them wholly by their heat. Thirdly we consider in fire the quality of clarity, or brightness; which signifies that these angels have in themselves an inextinguishable light, and that they also perfectly enlighten others."

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it” (Hebrews 13:2). The angels of the Bible generally appear in the role of God’s messengers to mankind. They are his instruments by whom he communicates his will to men, and in Jacob’s vision they are depicted as ascending and descending the ladder which stretches from earth to heaven.
It was an angel who found Agar in the wilderness; three angels visited with Abraham (pictured above) and foretold the birth of Isaas; angels drew Lot out of Sodom; an angel announces to Gideon that he is to save his people; an angel foretells the birth of Samson (Judges 13).
The spiritual nature of the angels is manifested very clearly in the account which Zachariah gives of the revelations bestowed upon him by the ministry of an angel. The prophet depicts the angel as speaking "in him". He seems to imply that he was conscious of an interior voice which was not that of God but of His messenger. The Massoretic text, the Septuagint, and the Vulgate all agree in thus describing the communications made by the angel to the prophet. Modern translations obscure this trait by persistently giving the rendering: "the angel that talked with me: instead of "within me" (cf. Zechariah 1:9-14; 2:3; 4:5; 5:10).

Many of the angels fell from this high estate with the rebellion led by Lucifer, highest of the angels. The rebellion spawned by the jealousy and pride of Satan was defeated by the Archangel Michael and all the hosts of heaven (Rev 12:7-12). Unlike us, the fallen angels (called “devils” or the “demons”) enjoy no possibility of redemption.
The Revelation of St. John the Divine tells us that they were expelled from heaven and cast down to earth where they assault the brethren and thwart the will of God. They know their time is short before the last judgment and that God will have the final victory.
The power of God is always stronger that the forces of darkness. Through prayer, grace, and the intercession of the angels we have God’s protection against the crafts and assaults of the devil. Many more angels remained faithful to God than rebelled against him.

". . . there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
‘Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

‘Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.’ When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the desert, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach. Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring—those who obey God’s commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus" (Revelation 12:7-12).

Among those who chose to serve and not rebel, all angels are Christ’s angels! Christ is the center of the angelic world. They are his angels: "When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him." They belong to him because they were created through and for him: "for in him all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities–all things were created through him and for him." They belong to him still more because he has made them messengers of his saving plan: "Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?"
The Archangel Gabriel foretold the birth of St. John the Baptist, and announced to the blessed Virgin Mary the Incarnation of God. When God brought the firstborn into the world, he said: "Let all God’s angels worship him." Their song of praise at the birth of Christ has not ceased resounding in the Church’s praise: "Glory to God in the highest!" Angels ministered to Jesus in the wilderness; angels strengthening Jesus in his agony; angels appeared at his resurrection; angels comforted the disciples at the ascension; angels ministered to the heirs of salvation (e.g. releasing Peter from prison); angels will come with Christ when he returns in glory.

St. Francis’ first biographer, Thomas of Celano, reports the stigmata (pictured above) as follows in his 1230 First Life of St. Francis: "When the blessed servant of God saw these things he was filled with wonder, but he did not know what the vision meant. He rejoiced greatly in the benign and gracious expression with which he saw himself regarded by the seraph, whose beauty was indescribable; yet he was alarmed by the fact that the seraph was affixed to the cross and was suffering terribly. Thus Francis rose, one might say, sad and happy, joy and grief alternating in him. He wondered anxiously what this vision could mean, and his soul was uneasy as it searched for understanding. And as his understanding sought in vain for an explanation and his heart was filled with perplexity at the great novelty of this vision, the marks of nails began to appear in his hands and feet, just as he had seen them slightly earlier in the crucified man above him. His hands and feet seemed to be pierced by nails, with the heads of the nails appearing in the palms of his hands and on the upper sides of his feet, the points appearing on the other side. The marks were round on the palm of each hand but elongated on the other side, and small pieces of flesh jutting out from the rest took on the appearance of the nail-ends, bent and driven back. In the same way the marks of nails were impressed on his feet and projected beyond the rest of the flesh. Moreover, his right side had a large wound as if it had been pierced with a spear, and it often bled so that his tunic and trousers were soaked with his sacred blood."

Chinese Evade U.S. Sanctions on Iran

Chinese companies banned from doing business in the U.S. for selling missile technology to Iran continue to do a brisk trade with American companies, according to an analysis of shipping records.
A unit of state-owned China Precision Machinery Import-Export Corp., for example, has made nearly 300 illegal shipments to U.S. firms since a ban was imposed on CPMIEC and its affiliates in mid-2006, according to an analysis of shipping records by the Wisconsin Project on Nuclear Arms Control, a nonprofit proliferation watchdog.
A Wall Street Journal review of the records and interviews with officials at some of the American companies indicate that the U.S. firms likely were unaware they were doing business with banned entities, and in many cases were tripped up by altered company names.
The CPMIEC shipments, worth millions of dollars, include everything from anchors and drilling equipment to automobile parts and toys.

In many cases, CPMIEC acted as a shipping intermediary — activity also banned under a 2006 presidential order.
The ability of CPMIEC and other foreign companies to continue doing business in the U.S. despite the sanctions comes as the Obama administration considers fresh economic sanctions against Iran.

The illegal shipments suggest that U.S. sanctions have become so numerous and complex that they have become difficult to enforce.
"We spend a lot of time convincing other countries that we need tighter sanctions on Iran when we need to better enforce our own laws already on the books," says Wisconsin Project director Gary Milhollin, a former consultant to the Pentagon on nuclear-proliferation matters.
Responsibility for enforcing sanctions falls to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC, an office with 69 investigators and a 2009 budget of $29 million.

OFAC is responsible for enforcing more than 20 sanctions programs targeting everything from nuclear proliferators and terror financiers to illegal imports of Cuban cigars.
OFAC hasn’t fined any U.S. companies for trading with CPMIEC or other Chinese companies banned in 2006.

In response to inquiries from the Journal, Treasury Department officials investigated CPMIEC and its subsidiaries further.

On Thursday, OFAC added one CPMIEC unit to its list of banned companies.
"If we see U.S. companies that are knowingly engaging in transactions with a proliferation target or front company, or that those targets are attempting to circumvent U.S. sanctions, we pursue those cases aggressively," says OFAC Director Adam Szubin in an interview.

Overall, he says, the sanctions program makes it difficult for nuclear proliferators to do business in the U.S.
In June 2006, the U.S. banned CPMIEC and three other Chinese companies from conducting business in the U.S., citing their alleged sales of missile technology to Iran in defiance of previous sanctions.

Two months later, a shipment of oil-drainage tanks from Shanghai landed at the port of Tacoma, Wash., bound for a New York City firm, American Forge & Foundry Inc. The shipper: a unit of CPMIEC, according to a shipping record known as a bill of lading.
Officials at CPMIEC didn’t respond to written questions from the Journal.
U.S. enforcement officials say it can be difficult for U.S. companies to avoid doing business with foreign companies and individuals under sanction.

Problems with translating company names can be an issue, they say.

Sanctioned companies also have proved adept at creating aliases or subsidiary shell companies to mask their ownership, they say.
"To the extent that a U.S. institution does process a transaction for a designated entity, those transactions tend to be inadvertent and are corrected quickly upon detection," says the OFAC’s Mr. Szubin.
It is unlikely that most U.S. companies knowingly flout the import bans: Criminal penalties for doing so include prison time.
John Iliff, general manager of American Forge & Foundry, says the single shipment of oil-drainage tanks it received in 2006 from the CPMIEC unit set off no alarms. "Trading in illegal goods certainly never crossed our minds," he says.
The shipment came from China JMM Import & Export Shanghai Pudong Corp., which didn’t appear on any sanctions list until Thursday.

Records indicate the company shares an address and phone number with a CPMIEC unit that was previously banned: CPMIEC Shanghai Pudong Corp. The Treasury determined that the two companies are affiliated.
Faced with simple tweaks to company names, even large U.S. corporations with sophisticated procedures for screening vendors can end up doing business with sanctioned firms.
Greenlee Textron, a unit of Textron Inc., in 2008 and 2009 purchased hand-held pipe benders used by plumbers from Chinese firm Shanghai Kayama Industrial Co. Kayama hired China JMM to facilitate payment and shipping of those goods.
Textron spokesman Michael Maynard says Greenlee was unaware of China JMM’s relationship to CPMIEC before receiving an inquiry from the Journal.

He says none of the parties to the 14 shipments appeared on any U.S. lists of sanctioned companies.
Many companies rely on software that is supposed to alert users if a company is subject to sanctions.

But China JMM didn’t register a "hit" on the sanctions-screening software used by Kohler Co. of Kohler, Wis., according to a company spokesman.

Until July 2009, Kohler purchased lawn-mower parts from a Shanghai firm that used China JMM as its export broker.
After Kohler was alerted last summer to China JMM’s affiliation with CPMIEC, it "immediately halted all orders…until our supplier found a new export broker," the spokesman says.
U.S. authorities have called CPMIEC a "serial proliferator."

The U.S. first sanctioned the firm in 1991 and 1993 for selling short range-missile technology to Pakistan.

After passage of the Iran Nonproliferation Act in 2000, the company was sanctioned in 2002 and 2003 for missile-related sales to Iran.
The Chinese government, CPMIEC’s owner, has objected to U.S. trade sanctions on nonproliferation grounds.

"This kind of mistaken practice… damages the atmosphere for Sino-American cooperation on nonproliferation, and is not beneficial to promoting international nonproliferation efforts," says Jiang Yu, a spokeswoman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 2006, LIMMT Economic & Trade Co., a Chinese seller of metallurgical products, was blocked from selling goods in the U.S. for selling high-strength metals and sophisticated military materials to Iran.
In April 2009, a New York grand jury indicted LIMMT and its owner, Li Fang Wei, for allegedly conspiring to evade that ban by using aliases, and the U.S. Treasury updated its sanctions list to include those aliases.
In 2006, Dalian Sunny Industry & Trade Co. sent seven shipments of steel parts to Coastal Flange Inc. in Houston. (The 2009 case established that Dalian was an LIMMT affiliate.)

In 2007, the shipments began coming from Dalian Orient Pipe Components Co.

Bills of lading reveal that Dalian Sunny and Dalian Orient share the same address and telephone number.
Officials at LIMMT, Dalian Sunny and Dalian Orient didn’t return calls seeking comment.
Mark Mekeel, president of Coastal Flange, says U.S. prosecutors contacted him about his trade with Dalian, but told him he had done nothing wrong.
"Each day I’m pounded on email by offers from Chinese companies," he says. "But I’m not part of some scam. I’m just a guy trying to bring in some product."

Texbook Doublethink: SPLC’s Latest Effort Attacks Constitutionalists

The Southern Poverty Law Center’s latest Associated Press release entitled,Baffling beliefs mark Sovereign Citizen theories, is the organization’s most recent effort to marginalize large blocks of the population it deems to be a domestic threat. Examination of this, as well as other documents, reveals a systematic pattern of media manipulation and disinformation aimed squarely at the American people.

In the latest release the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) identifies,  “the number of people who now consider themselves sovereign citizens, Americans above the law who adhere only to the Constitution and follow a revised history of the United States”.

For any students of critical thinking, the SPLC is employing a 20th century propaganda technique know as doublespeak. Here the SPLC attempts to construct the doublethink idea that such Americans who adhere only to the Constitution are “above the law”.

Next it offers out proponents of sound money by railing against them, “The gold standard and bankruptcy: Belief that the country went bankrupt in 1933 when it suspended the gold standard and no longer had collateral to back its loans.” By spinning the conversation in one direction, here the SPLC states what is actual fact in the US and what few economists and historians will argue- that the country is bankrupt and has no real collateral for its loans, but attempts to paint this real-and-present economic reality as a ‘conspiracy theory’ propagated by so-called extremists.

And finally, in a grand demonstration of doublespeak that would dazzle even Eric Blair, the SPLC uses the accusation of “Straw Man” claiming that domestic extremists have concocted a series of false ideas in order to attack the ruling establishment. This is an interesting double-reverse spin move on the part of the SPLC. The irony in such a claim made by an organization like the SPLC could not be any more poetic, as they themselves have worked tirelessly, and spent countless millions building legions of their own Neo-Nazi and white supremacist ‘straw men’ in order to discredit multitudes of genuine modern political movements, fledgling activists and paleoconservative groups- a fact evident throughout their own activities and published reports.

This one is from their own Annual Report: “The SPLC sent a letter to committee chairmen with oversight over homeland security and the armed ser vices in July after the Intelligence Project found dozens of personal profiles on a neo-Nazi website where indi viduals listed “military” as their occupation. The letter called for an investigation and a true zero-tolerance policy that prohibit extremists from serving in the mili tary.”

By using textbook doublespeak, the SPLC aims to propel further doublethink into the national public conversation. The object of this game is to first frame and thus control all debates which fall into the categories that this organization has flagged as ‘dangerous’ to America. When the SPLC says ‘extremist in the military’, what it really means is any soldier who it identifies as belonging to, or affiliated with any group, or group sub-set that the SPLC defines as “extremist”. According to the SPLC this might include anyone who is affiliated with Patriot groups, Immigration reform, Anti-abortion, 911 Truth, We R Change, Oath Keepers, Ron Paul, Gun Owners of America, and the list goes on.

Any genuine citizens concerned about the danger of domestic Cointel and propaganda campaigns would do well to take a closer look at the organization known as the Southern Poverty Law Center and also pay attention to the predictable spin which it continues to shamelessly produce on cue. It’s also interesting to note how the SPLC uses its cloak of nonprofit status and gains an almost direct pipeline to nearly all of the major US media outlets. In PR terms, this is a near military operation and cannot be achieved without coordination from the higher echelons of both sides of that equation.

The SPLC was founded in 1971 by civil right lawyers Morris Dees and Joseph Levin Jr., and by anyone’s estimate, this organization would have been a key chess piece in a post-reform South where political power struggles and spheres of influence rubbed together to form the political landscape we have today. This is also an organization which has, on record, been penetrated and used by the FBI. Their current head of Intelligence, Mark Potok, has curiously been attached to past events including the 1993 siege in Waco, the rise of militias, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and the trial of Timothy McVeigh. Hardly the“objective observer” it advertizes itself to be, the SPLC has become a trusted dispenser of carefully selected talking points which form a wider political agenda, synchronizing its messaging with similar US-based front organizations like the ADL, the ACLU and AIPAC. Note the timing and frequency of their releases which always precede or follow certain domestic current events and which are almost certainly inserted to suppress real debate and discussion on real issues which are facing the United States.

The SPLC Money Machine

It advertises itself as “The Southern Poverty Law Center is a nonprofit civil rights organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society.” The SPLC’s own 2009 financial report boasts a total operating fund support and revenue of over $31,000,000. No doubt this bureau employs some young  community legal workers and may even perform some cursory function helping certain people in need, but it’s main function has become that of a media spin  machine. We can see that it has the financial resources and media clout to run heavy and sustained information campaigns, as well as physically target its stated adversaries, namely Patriot groups, lawful local militia groups and Constitutionalists. It is, in effect, one of many attack dogs used by the ruling elite in order to dilute genuine dissent amongst the growing ranks of vocal Americans.

The SPLC has also taken credit for the resignation of former CNN anchorman Lou Dobbs, gloating in its annual statement, “When news anchor Lou Dobbs used his CNN program to promote the bogus claim that President Obama is not a native-born U.S. citizen, the SPLC called on CNN to take Dobbs off the air, citing his history of promot ing immigrant-bashing conspiracy theories and myths… It marked the end of a five-year effort by the SPLC to educate and inform the public – and Dobbs – about the baseless conspiracy theories and anti-immigrant propaganda promoted on his show.”

Fingerprints on most major domestic events

Interestingly, it advertizes itself to be the self-appointed defender against domestic extremists, while at the same time the SPLC is promoting the likes of Bill Ayers (including a link between the FBI’s and the SPLC’s websites), a man actually convicted of domestic terrorism as he carried out a series of bombing within the US.  There are many publicly documented links between the SPLC and the FBI which should really raise suspicion as to the depths to which this supposed nonprofit entity actually goes, most notably the SPLC’s links to informants within the FBI alleged ‘sting’ operation at Elohim City and direct connections to Oklahoma City bomberTimothy McVeigh. More recently, the SPLC has provided close coverage of FBI informant Hal Turner and his bizarre trial- a story of minor importance in grand scheme of current events, but very telling by the fact that the SPLC will shepherd along such a story where a compromised FBI informant is implicated. All these connects between the FBI and the SPLC are of course, no mere coincidence. Any educated reader can easily glean from the SPLC’s own news releases and coverage, the sophisticated reverse-spin and antiquated 1970′s-quality left-wing cover which has become a signature of the SPLC media machine. It’s become predictable to the point of ridiculousness.

Most notable of the SPLC’s inventions is the concept of the “hate group”, a racially-loaded term which carries no real legal weight and is not defined by any federal statutes, yet it’s a phrase which this supposed legal organisation uses ad nausium to support any infinite number of accusations against an equally infinite number of people in the US. The SPLC has also concocted the sister term  “hate group activities” in order to discredit any lawful community organizing by so-called “hate groups”.  To this day, the SPLC still touts Neo-Nazis and Klansman as major players in their hate matrix, even as the rest of America watched those groups descend into comic book status.

The SPLC has also pioneered the concept of “domestic extremist”, a weapon it has deployed numerous times and in different contexts to support their own alarmist claims and support a multitude of disinformation campaigns. Naturally, Patriot groups, anti-Obamacare activists, Immigration Reformists, protests against Israeli aggression, 911 Truth demonstrations, Oath Keeper meetings, Tea party gatherings and the time-honored marches on Washington would all fall under their catch-all definition of ‘hate activities’.

Modern media trends

The reality behind this office is that it no longer serves as a real and useful independent legal bureau, but rather an out-dated and clumsy propaganda tool for social engineering in the United States. Handlers of this organization may believe that the SPLC is working like a well-oiled machine, ever-effective at infecting its choice talking points into the mainstream. But like all tired institutions who rely on heavily the linear News 1.0 operating system(aka the ‘spoon fed’ system), this model of traditional propaganda distribution is becoming increasingly outdated by the day, as millions of web surfers embrace the more sophisticated News 2.0 model, a model which rewards the readers and viewers who choose to dig, research, corroborate and verify their information- as opposed  to accepting information(and obvious spin) on face value.

A real danger does exist however when organisations like the SPLC begin to profile Americans according to their own labels and then supply their information to  Department of Homeland Security (DHS) fusion centers, and finally distribute them to local police agencies. The irony appears yet again- the SPLC claims to be protecting Americans from Neo-Nazis and what it is really achieving is moving America closer to a real Nazi-style or Stasi-esque system of persecution in America.

Americans need to become better guardians of their language, not allowing the likes of the SPLC to create divisive abstract concepts and dump doublethink all over the news for their own gain. They are nothing more than a money machine, a dinosaur which makes its living on pedalling its own brand of fear and propaganda to the highest bidder. Dated and bloated, thankfully it’s an organization in decline.

News that Russia will load nuclear fuel rods into an Iranian reactor has touched off a countdown to a point of no return, a deadline by which Israel would have to launch an attack on Iran’s Bushehr reactor before it becomes effectively "immune" to any assault, says former Bush administration U.N. Ambassador John R. Bolton.
Once the fuel rods are loaded, Bolton told Fox News on Friday afternoon, "it makes it essentially immune from attack by Israel. Because once the rods are in the reactor an attack on the reactor risks spreading radiation in the air, and perhaps into the water of the Persian Gulf."
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin declared in March that Russia would start the Bushehr reactor this summer. But the announcement from a spokesman for Russia’s state atomic agency to Reuters Friday sent international diplomats scrambling to head off a crisis.
The story immediately became front-page news in Israel, which has laid precise plans to carry out an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities while going along with President Obama’s plans to use international sanctions and diplomatic persuasion to convince Iran’s clerics not to go nuclear.
Bolton made it clear that it is widely assumed that any Israeli attack on the Bushehr reactor must take place before the reactor is loaded with fuel rods.
"If they’re going to do it that’s the window that they have," Bolton declared. "Otherwise as I said before, once the rods are in the reactor, if you attack the reactor you’re going to open it up and radiation will escape at least into the atmosphere and possibly into the waters of the Persian Gulf.
"So most people think that neither Israel nor the United States, come to that, would attack the reactor after it’s been fueled."
Bolton cited the 1981 Israeli attack on Saddam Hussein’s Osirak reactor outside Baghdad and the September 2007 Israeli attack on a North Korean reactor being built in Syria. Both of those strikes came before fuel rods were loaded into those reactors.
"So if it’s going to happen in Bushehr it has to happen before the fuel rods go in," Bolton said.
The conversation that touched off the de facto deadline for Israeli military action was a telephone conversation with wire services involving Sergei Novikov, a spokesman for Rosatom, the Russian Energy State Nuclear Corp.
Novikov said: "The fuel will be loaded on Aug 21. This is the start of the physical launch” of the reactor.
"From that moment the Bushehr plant will be officially considered a nuclear-energy installation," Novikov said, adding that the head of Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, will visit Bushehr Aug. 21 to conduct a ceremony for the event.
According to Bolton, once the reactor is operational, it is only a matter of time before it begins producing plutonium that could be used in a nuclear weapon.
"And in the normal operation of this reactor, in just a fairly short period of time, you could get substantial amounts of plutonium to use as nuclear weapons," Bolton told Fox.
Russia, which is operating under a $1 billion contract with Iran, has spent more than a decade building the reactor. If Russia moves forward with its plan to fuel the reactor, it could be seen as a major setback to the Obama administration’s strategy of engaging Russian leaders in order to win their cooperation.
"The U.S. urged them not to send the Iranian’s fuel rods," Bolton said. "They did that. The Obama administration has urged them not to insert the fuel rods in the reactors, but as they’ve just announced that will begin next week. What that does over time is help Iran get another route to nuclear weapons through the plutonium they could reprocess out of the spent fuel rods."
The developments mean Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu soon may face a stark choice: Attack the Bushehr reactor in the next 8 days, or allow it to become operational despite the certainty it would greatly enhance Iran’s ability to create nuclear weapons.
Russian leaders have said the Bushehr reactor project is being closely monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN’s nuclear watchdog group. According to Iran’s ISNA news agency, IAEA inspectors will be on hand to observe the fuel-rod loading process that is now scheduled to begin Aug. 21.
According to Russian officials, Iran has promised in writing to send all spent fuel rods from Bushehr back to Russia for reprocessing, to ensure they cannot be used for nuclear weapons.
Bolton said the reactor has been "a hole" in American foreign policy for over a decade.
The failure to demand it be shut down began in the Bush years, he said, and continues with the Obama administration "under what I believe is the mistaken theory that Iran is entitled to the peaceful use of nuclear energy."
"I don’t think Iran is entitled to that, or I don’t think we ought to allow it to happen, because they’re manifestly violating any number of obligations under the non-proliferation treaty not to seek nuclear weapons. But this has been a hole in American policy for some number of years, and Iran and Russia are obviously exploiting it," Bolton said.
Russia’s move would put Iran "in a much better position overall," he said, adding, "I think this is a very delicate point, as I say, it closes off to the Israelis one possible target for pre-emptive military action.
U.N. sanctions against Iran, he said, "have not had and will not have any material effect on Iran’s push to have deliverable nuclear weapons."

New superbug, ‘potentially a major global health problem,’ found in Canada

At least two Canadians have been infected by a new superbug that defies treatment and could spread rapidly around the world, a leading Canadian medical microbiologist says.

Both Canadians, one in Alberta and one in B.C. infected by the antibiotic-resistant NDM-1 have recovered but, “we don’t know if the infection will come back,” Dr. Johann Pitout of the University of Calgary told the Star on Wednesday.

What scientists do know about this new discovery, reported Wednesday inhttp://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3099(10)70143-2/abstractThe LancetEND, is that it starts with a new gene, NDM-1, that secretes an enzyme that blocks almost all antibiotics from fighting certain bacteria, including the common E coli.

The superbugs “are potentially a major global health problem,” said study http://medicine.cf.ac.uk/en/person/tim-walsh/lead author Dr. Timothy Walsh of the University of Cardiff, WalesEND. “It is likely NDM-1 will spread worldwide.”

Indeed, since NDM-1 was first detected in 2008 in a handful of British and Indian cases, it’s jumped to 180 in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the U.K. in the study. That doesn’t include the Canadian orhttp://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5924a5.htmthreeU.S. cases reported in late June by the U.S. Centers for Disease ControlEND.

Their ages ranged from 4 to 66, and the reasons for hospitalization included bone-marrow transplants, dialysis, heart disease, pregnancy, traffic accidents, burns and cosmetic surgery.

All of the infections, including the Canadians and Americans, started with hospitalization in India or Pakistan, sometimes for cheaper or quicker elective surgery than was available in the West.

Pitout revealed the Alberta case.

Sylwia Gomes, spokesperson for the Public Health Agency of Canada, knew of the B.C. case reported in February “in a patient transferred from a hospital in India.”

“We’ve been aware of this situation for some time, and we’ve been closely monitoring it both in Canada and globally for the past year,” Dr. Howard Njoo, director general for the Centre for Communicable Diseases and Infection Control, told The Canadian Press.

“And as a result, with the patient being isolated and so on, there was no further spread of infection to anyone else in the hospital,” he said.

“The take-home message for the Canadian public is, if you travel to the subcontinent and you get admitted to hospital for whatever reason, medical or cosmetic surgery, and you come back and get sick, you should tell somebody you’ve been in hospital in India or Pakistan,” Pitout said.

Pitout, in a Commentary in The Lancet, goes one step further, suggesting screening and testing of anyone returning to Canada after medical procedures in India or Pakistan.

“If this emerging public health threat is ignored, sooner or later the medical community could be confronted with” untreatable antibody-resistant bacteria that trigger big increases in health-care costs, Pitout wrote.

The Lancet report is based on small numbers, said Yasmeen Sayeed of Surgical Tourism Canada, an agency that helps Canadians get connected with hospitals in India.

“We send about 40 patients every month to India and I haven’t heard of any problems,” she said, adding that food-borne infections happen in that country, especially in the summer.

“We tell our patients to be very careful. . . only drink bottled water and even advice them to use it (bottled water) for brushing teeth.”

She added that their patients stay at high-end hotels.

Surgical Tourism Canada has its head office in Vancouver, but Sayeed said her clients are from across the country and go to India mostly for orthopedic procedures and weight-loss surgeries.

But lately, dozens of MS patients have travelled for the controversial Liberation treatment that is not available in Canada. The organization has a tie-up with two hospitals in India: Apollo and Fortis group. Patients go to the Indian cities of Chennai, Bangalore and New Delhi.

Chennai, a city in southern India, has been mentioned in the Lancet report. Sayeed said she knew that a couple of her clients got food-poisoning while in Bangalore for medical procedures but not in Chennai. However, she has asked doctors at these two hospital chains about precautions they are taking against the superbug.

“I’ve asked them if our patients should be concerned and what are they doing about it,” she said. “Of course, we take this very seriously. We don’t want our patients to have any problems.”

NDM-1, the study found, has alarming potential to spread. The gene was found on DNA structures that can flip from one bacteria to another. Even worse, the bacteria are gram-negative, which are already highly resistant to antibiotics and for which no new drugs are being created, said Pitout.

The gene “is widespread,” said Pitout, “but we don’t know how common it is. We don’t know what the risk is of a patient getting it or how many E. coli in India have it.”

It has been seen largely in E. coli bacteria, the most common cause of urinary tract infections, and produces an infection that is uncomfortable but not deadly.

 

“It’s unlikely to kill anybody,” he said.

Walsh and colleagues first discovered the gene in 2009 in bacteria taken from a Swedish patient who had been admitted to hospital in India. British health authorities issued a health alert in July 2009, about the rising toll of Britons infected by the superbug after “medical tourism.”

“The potential of NDM-1 to be a worldwide public health problem is great, and coordinated international surveillance is needed,” the authors wrote.

“It is disturbing, in context, to read calls in the popular press for U.K. patients to opt for corrective surgery in India with the aim of saving the National Health Service money,” the study concluded. “Such a proposal might ultimately cost the NHS substantially more than the short-term saving. The potential for wider international spread (is) clear and frightening.”

‘Health tourists’ flocking to south Asia have carried a new class of antibiotic-resistant superbugs to Britain, researchers reported on Wednesday, warning that the bacteria could spread worldwide.

Many hospital infections that were already difficult to treat have become even more impervious to drugs due to a recently discovered gene that can jump across different species of bacteria.

This so-called NDM-1 gene was first identified last year by Cardiff University’s Timothy Walsh in two types of bacteria – Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli – in a Swedish patient admitted to hospital in India.

Worryingly, the new NDM-1 bacteria are resistant even to carbapenems, a group of antibiotics often reserved as a last resort for emergency treatment for multi-drug resistant bugs.

Researchers said the bugs had been brought into Britain by patients who travelled to India or Pakistan for cosmetic surgery.

‘If these infections were allowed to continue without appropriate treatment, then certainly one would expect to see some sort of mortality,’ Walsh, a microbiology professor, told BBC radio.

‘It’s going to be very difficult to treat the infections once the patients present with these types of bacteria. You won’t get well.’

In the new study, led by Walsh and Madras University’s Karthikeyan Kumarasamy, researchers set out to determine how common the NDM-1 producing bacteria were in South Asia and Britain, where several cases had turned up.

Checking hospital patients with suspect symptoms, they found 44 cases – 1.5 per cent of those screened – in Chennai, and 26 (eight per cent of those screened) in Haryana, both in India.

They likewise found the superbug in Bangladesh and Pakistan, as well as 37 cases in Britain, some in patients who had recently returned from having cosmetic surgery in India or Pakistan.

‘India also provides cosmetic surgery for other Europeans and Americans, and it is likely that NDM-1 will spread worldwide,’ said the study, published in British medical journal The Lancet.

NDM-1 was mostly found in E. coli, a common source of community-acquired urinary tract infections, and K. pneumoniae, and was impervious to all antibiotics except two, tigecycline and colistin.

In some cases, even these drugs did not beat back the infection.

‘We’ve actually almost run out of antibiotics. We only have two left and one isn’t particularly good,’ Walsh told the BBC.

Crucially, the NDM-1 gene was found on DNA structures, called plasmids, that can be easily copied and transferred between bacteria, giving the bug ‘an alarming potential to spread and diversify’, the authors said.

‘Unprecedented air travel and migration allow bacterial plasmids and clones to be transported rapidly between countries and continents,’ they said, adding that most could remain undetected.

The emergence of these new drug-resistant strains could become a serious global public health problem as the major threat shifts toward a broad class of bacteria – including those armed with the NDM-1 gene – known as ‘Gram-negative’, the researchers warn.

‘There are few new anti-Gram-negative antibiotics in development, and none that are effective against NDM-1,’ the study said.

NDM-1 stands for New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1.

‘We believe it’s present within the community within India – not just within the hospitals,’ Walsh said.

The professor said that looking ahead to what might be available to treat NDM-1, ‘there are no new antibiotics that are going to be available in 10 years’ time’.

He added: ‘We desperately need – in the 21st century it sounds ridiculous that we don’t have – a globally-funded surveillance system.

‘Secondly, there is a desperate need for new and novel antibiotics targeted towards these types of bacteria.’

A new superbug that is resistant to even the most powerful antibiotics has entered UK hospitals, experts warn.

They say bacteria which make an enzyme called NDM-1 travelled back with NHS patients who had gone abroad to countries like India and Pakistan for treatments such as cosmetic surgery.

Although there have only been about 50 cases identified in the UK so far, scientists fear it will go global.

NDM-1 can exist inside different bacteria, like E.coli, and it makes them resistant to one of the most powerful groups of antibiotics – carbapenems.

These are generally reserved for use in emergencies and to combat hard-to-treat infections caused by other multi-resistant bacteria.

And experts fear NDM-1 could now jump to other strains of bacteria that are already resistant to many other antibiotics.

Ultimately, this could produce dangerous infections that would spread rapidly from person to person and be almost impossible to treat.

At least one of the NDM-1 infections the researchers analysed was resistant to all known antibiotics.

Similar infections have been seen in the US, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands and international researchers say that NDM-1 could become a major global health problem.

Infections have already been passed from patient to patient in UK hospitals.

The way to stop NDM-1, say researchers, is to rapidly identify and isolate any hospital patients who are infected.

Normal infection control measures, such as disinfecting hospital equipment and doctors and nurses washing their hands with antibacterial soap, can stop the spread.

And currently, most of the bacteria carrying NDM-1 have been treatable using a combination of different antibiotics.

But the potential of NDM-1 to become endemic worldwide is “clear and frightening”, say the researchers in their Lancet paper.

Don’t panic, but be warned, another Super Bug is lurking. Move over H1N1, out of the way SARS, NDM-1 is taking the driving seat. Recent Health Reports have identified this new “bug” as one of the more dangerous enzymes out there. This antibiotic resistant superbug is starting to spread though out numerous countries including the UK, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and the USA.

This devious bug will gain access to the victims system by hiding in something else such as E.Coli. Think “Trojan Horse” deception. Once it gains access by disguise, it is too late. It will spread this way from patient to patient with no guaranteed way to kill it. Health Officials fear it is a matter of time before this becomes a huge health epidemic.

The greatest amount of cases involve those that have recently traveled abroad to India. Especially those who have sought alternative health treatments. One study out of Cardiff University in England reported 17 out of 37 cases had visited India or Pakistan prior to becoming ill, with the majority seeking cheaper cosmetic surgery as the primary reason of the trip.

Doctors in India aren’t surprised that the Super Bug probably originated there. Drug control there is poor and common antibiotics have become ineffective in India. Some reasons may be because people can buy powerful antibiotics over the counter leading to over use. They also take small doses and discontinue treatment in order to save money. There are no current antibiotics, nor any in development, that can kill NDM-1 on their own.

Researchers have indicated that the way to stop NDM-1 before it runs out of control is to rapidly identify and isolate any hospital patients who are infected. Normal infection control measures, such as disinfecting hospital equipment, hospital staff and visitors washing their hands with antibacterial soap, and patient isolation can stop the spread. A recently documented case had one hospital scrambling. Fiona Coogan, a health director of several London hospitals stated hospital staff took several precautionary measures. Staff did indeed isolate the patient. They had to wear disposable gowns and gloves when dealing with the patient as well. Only a single member on shift was allowed access. Since the recent discharge, the rooms have been fumigated to ensure no trace of the superbug remained.

The HPA issued a National Resistance Alert in 2009 after they noted an increasing number of cases, some of them fatal, emerging in the UK. The Centers for Disease Control in the United States issued a similar warning in June 2010 after three cases of infections arising from NDM-1 were detected between January and June.

The UK is battling a superbug gene which makes nearly any bacteria a superbug, resistant to antibiotics. People who had undergone recent surgery in India or Pakistan brought the resilient gene back home with them.

According to MSN.com, the superbug gene, NDM-1, amazingly alters bacteria to make them immune to most drugs. NDM-1 has spread from India to the UK and also to “Australia, Canada, the U.S., the Netherlands and Sweden.” The superbug is now on the verge of becoming a worldwide concern.

A combination of new drugs are now sought to kill the superbug in the reported 50 UK cases. Doctors say the only way to end NDM-1 from spreading is to quarantined those showing signs of infection immediately.

Speaking about the potential for NDM-1 to go global, UK’s Health Protection Agency (HPA) researcher Dr David Livermore said, “The fear would be that [the superbug gene] gets into a strain of bacteria that is very good at being transmitted between patients.”

Dr. Livermore’s fears are well founded and this scenario is similar to many frightening science fiction medical horror movies… But it’s real and it could wipe out a large portion of the Earth’s population if left unattended. Hopefully all the cases have been found out and all those infected be placed in quarantine.

India raged by UK scientists for false NDM-1 superbug propaganda

News about super bug consisting of New Delhi metallo beta lactamase (NDM-1) enzyme is still hot on the plate and claimed that bacteria was spread from hospitals in India and Pakistan.  This strain of bacteria is touted as resistant to almost every antibiotic and hence poses threat to the human life.  India was quick to respond and rejected claim of British scientist that NDM-1 enzyme was originated from India. Indian health ministry said it was unfair to link the bug to India and officials described it as “malicious propaganda”.

Indian health officials responded in a press release by saying that the “plasmid”, associated with drug resistance to antibiotics, is present “in the environment, may be in the intestines of humans and animals universally.”

Bad publicity to Indian Medical Tourism Industry
Medical Tourism has been gaining momentum from past few years and is projected to growth at a rate of double digits for next decade or so.  As a part of this Medical Tourism, patients from all over the world are tapping into medical facilities in countries like India due to significant lower cost.  Many officials responded to this BBC report as sensational, unfair and wrong propaganda.  Some of the specific comments include:

• We strongly refute the naming of this enzyme as New Delhi metallo beta lactamase
• We also refute that hospitals in India are not safe for treatment, including medical tourism
• When India is emerging as a medical tourism destination, this type of news is unfortunate and may be a sinister design of multi-national companies, said MP SS Ahluwalia of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party.
• Congress party’s Jayanthi Natarajan said the report of the superbug was a “wrong propaganda against the country”.

It may be difficult to pinpoint the origin of NDM-1 enzyme as indicated by an Indian official “a person could become infected with the drug-resistant bacteria anywhere in the world”.  I think, it will be difficult to dig out roots of origin of NDM-1 enzyme.  One way of approaching it would be to look at two – three months travel history of the affected patients and alert authorities of those places of risk of NDM-1 infection.  Proper action is needed to eliminate this infection as its spread can be much more deadly than recent swine flu pandemic.

The seriousness of this issue is more than what most realize. Fluoridation ranks with GMO’s and tainted, forced vaccinations among the great crimes against humanity.
Understanding the Different Fluorides
There are two types of fluoride. Calcium Fluoride, which appears naturally in underground water supplies, is relatively benign. However, too much consumed daily can lead to bone or dental problems. Calcium is used to counter fluoride poisoning when it occurs. This redeeming factor indicates that the calcium in naturally formed calcium fluoride neutralizes much of fluoride’s toxic effects.
On the other hand, the type of fluorides added to water supplies and other beverages and foods are waste products of the nuclear, aluminum, and now mostly the phosphate (fertilizer) industries. The EPA has classified these as toxins: fluorosilicate acid, sodium silicofluoride, and sodium fluoride.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For this article, the term Sodium Fluoride will include all three types. Sodium fluoride is used for rat poison and as a pesticide. According to a scientific study done several years ago, Comparative Toxicity of Fluorine Compounds, industrial waste sodium fluorides are 85 times more toxic than naturally occurring calcium fluoride.
Health Hazards of Sodium Fluoride
Generally, most fluoride entering the body is not easily eliminated. It tends to accumulate in the body’s bones and teeth. Recently, it has been discovered to accumulate even more in the pineal gland, located in the middle of the brain.
This consequence of dental fluorosis, which seriously harms teeth, from daily fluoridation has been documented. Yet, the American Dental Association(AMA) continues beating a dead horse, promoting fluoride. There is a refusal to admit that instead of preventing tooth decay, fluoride causes even more dental harm.
The flood of sodium fluoride in water and food also creates other more serious health problems that are not widely publicized, even suppressed. Nevertheless, in addition to fluorosis, independent labs and reputable researchers have linked the following health issues with daily long term intake of sodium fluoride:
*Cancer
*Genetic DNA Damage
*Thyroid Disruption – affecting the complete endocrine system and leading to obesity
*Neurological – diminished IQ and inability to focus, lethargy and weariness.
*Alzheimer’s Disease
*Melatonin Disruption, lowers immunity to cancer, accelerates aging, sleep disorders.
*Pineal Gland, calcification, which clogs this gland located in the middle of the brain.
How Did We Get Stuck With Stuff?
According to investigative journalist Christopher Bryson, author of The Fluoride Deception, getting large quantities of sodium fluoride into the water and food system was a ploy of public relations sponsored by the industries who were saddled with getting rid of the toxic materials.
Fluoride was necessary for the processing or enriching of uranium. The pro-fluoride propaganda was started during the Manhattan Project to create the first atom bombs in the 1940’s. The spin was to convince workers and locals where the largest nuclear plant was located in Tennessee that fluoride was not only safe, it was good for kids’ dental health.
In the early 1950’s, the notorious spin master and father of advertising, Edward Bernays, continued the campaign for adding fluorides to water supplies as an experiment in engineering human consent! Then the AMA picked up on the dental issue and endorsed sodium fluoride’s addition to water supplies. The few dissenting health studies and reports were usually squashed. Those dissenting voices were dismissed as quacks regardless of their credentials.
Approximately 2/3 of the USA water supply is laced with sodium fluoride. Sodium fluoride is a common pesticide. So that residue is in some foods. Some sodas, packaged orange juices, and even bottled drinking water for babies contain fluoride additives. Buyer beware. Read your labels carefully.
Avoiding Fluoridation
Keep in mind that boiling only increases the concentration of fluoride to water more. But removing fluoride from tap water is not so difficult. Reverse osmosis works well for removing fluorides. If you own your home and can spring for the bucks, you can have one installed under the sink in your kitchen. That makes things very convenient for your fluoride removal from tap water.
If this is not your situation, grab a couple of large jugs and fill them up from reverse osmosis machines in health food stores, supermarkets, and other locations. There are several such machines around, usually labeled as usingreverse osmosis, and they usually take coins. So it is the most accessible and cheapest way to go if you can’t install one where you live.
The Physiological Importance of the Pineal Gland
During the late 1990’s in England, a scientist by the name of Jennifer Luke undertook the first study the effects of sodium fluoride on the pineal gland. She determined that the pineal gland, located in the middle of the brain, was a target for fluoride. The pineal gland simply absorbed more fluoride than any other physical matter in the body, even bones.
Because of the pineal gland’s importance to the endocrine system, her conclusions were a breakthrough. Her study provided the missing link to a lot of physiological damage from sodium fluoride that had been hypothesized but not positively connected. A veritable root source for the chain reaction of blocked endocrine activity had been isolated.
Good news though. Frequent exposure to outdoor sunshine, 20 minutes or so at a time, will help stimulate a fluoride calcified pineal gland. Just make sure you take off your hat. This is more important than most realize, because the pineal gland affects so much other enzyme and endocrine activity, including melatonin production.
The 2012 Connection
First a bit about 2012, a date many have heard about. According to Carlos Barrios, anthropologist, historian, and investigator who was initiated as a Mayan ceremonial priest and spiritual guide, "Anthropologists visit the temple sites and read the inscriptions . . . but they do not read the signs correctly. . . . Other people write about prophecy in the name of the Maya. They say that the world will end in December 2012. The Mayan elders are angry with this. The world will not end. It will be transformed."
Carlos Barrios goes on to say that the transformation will be both spiritual and physical. The transition started in 1987. He says that we are in a spiritual transition from the rule of materialism, greed, and enmity to a new period of cooperation and peace – but not without difficulty. The current oligarchy is happy with what they have and don’t want to give it up, and they are powerful. The Mayans claim that 2012 marks the end of the period of the fourth sun and the beginning of the fifth sun.
Carlos points out that adversarial revolution against the ruling class will not work. It is up to those who want this shift to connect with others of like mind and begin actively creating networks of real cooperation. The old will crumble. The new period will dawn with its growing pains, the severity of which depends on our ability to accept what is happening and go with the flow. This, he says, requires evolving to unconditional love, with an open and simple heart, forgiveness, and cooperation with less ego competition.
Connecting the Pineal Gland to This 2012 Matter
Well, what does all this have to do with the pineal gland? A lot. It is considered a portal to the inner or higher self by yogi masters, including Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi. Psychics consider it to be the link for inter dimensional experiences. It is associated with what many call the third eye or sixth chakra, which is a doorway to higher consciousness and bliss.
And it is vital for supporting intuition, an ability that will be needed during hard times. So it is necessary to evolve spiritually in order to help create better understanding, acceptance of our fellow humans, and easier group cooperation. Meditation is a part of this evolving. That and a little sunshine, good rest and food, can cause a calcified pineal gland to loosen up and allow that portal to open.
An unusual psychiatrist, professor of medicine at University of New Mexico, and practicing Buddhist, Dr. Rick Strassman, MD, has written a book based on actual human studies of people under the psychedelic drug, DMT, titled DMT, The Spirit Molecule. He has discovered, among other things, that the pineal gland is a source of DMT production during birth and at death, and during near death or mystical experiences. This chemical approach corroborates the idea of the pineal gland as a portal, where the spirit passes through to other dimensions, either entering this physical realm or leaving it.
South American and Central American shamans use Ayahuasca, an herbal potion that stimulates DMT for psychological healing and spiritual initiation ceremonies. They have expanded their ceremonies with Ayahuasca by traveling throughout the world or opening their local facilities to non natives. They are doing this urgently in anticipation of 2012. Their desire is to jump start and expand individuals’ consciousness so the transition of consciousness will be facilitated and incorporate as many as possible.
This information is meant to link the physical realm’s pineal gland to higher states of awareness and other realms. The point is not to advocate or discourage psychedelic drug use, but to encourage health, meditation and spiritual growth by maintaining a fluoride free pineal gland. 2012 is approaching. Time to get in shape!

The pineal gland was the last endocrine gland to have its function discovered. Its location deep in the brain seemed to indicate its importance. This combination led to its being a "mystery" gland with myth, superstition and even metaphysical theories surrounding its perceived function. 

The Pineal gland is occasionally associated with the sixth Chakra (also called Ajna or the third eye Chakra in yoga). It is believed by some to be a dormant organ that can be awakened to enable "telepathic" communication.

In the physical body the eye views objects upside down. It sends the image of what it observes to the brain which interprets the image and makes it appear right side-up to us.

But the human body has another physical eye whose function has long been recognized by humanity. It is called the ‘Third Eye’ which in reality is the Pineal Gland. It is long thought to have mystical powers. Many consider it the Spiritual Third Eye, our Inner Vision.

It is located in the geometric center of the brain. This correlates to the location of the Great Pyramid in the center of the physical planet.

The Pineal Gland is about the size of a pea, and is in the center of the brain in a tiny cave behind and above the pituitary gland which lies a little behind the root of the nose. It is located directly behind the eyes, attached to the third ventricle.

The true function of this mysterious gland has long been contemplated by philosophers and Spiritual Adepts. Ancient Greeks believed the Pineal gland to be our connection to the Realms of Thought.

Rene Descartes called it the Seat of the Soul, believing it is unique in the anatomy of the human brain in being a structure not duplicated on the right and left sides. This observation is not true, however; under a microscope one finds the Pineal gland is divided into two fine hemispheres.

This gland is activated by Light, and it controls the various biorhythms of the body. It works in harmony with the hypothalamus gland which directs the body’s thirst, hunger, sexual desire and the biological clock that determines our aging process.

When the Pineal gland awakens one feels a pressure at the base of the brain. This pressure will often be experienced when connecting to higher frequency. A head injury can also activate the Third Eye – Pineal Gland.

While the physiological function of the pineal gland has been unknown until recent times, mystical traditions and esoteric schools have long known this area in the middle of the brain to be the connecting link between the physical and spiritual worlds. Considered the most powerful and highest source of ethereal energy available to humans, the Pineal gland has always been important in initiating supernatural powers. Development of psychic talents has been closely associated with this organ of higher vision.

There is a pathway from the retinas to the hypothalamus called the retinohypothalamic tract. It brings information about light and dark cycles to a region of the hypothalamus called the suprachiasmatic nucleus(SCN). From the SCN, nerve impulses travel via the pineal nerve (sympathetic nervous system) to the pineal gland. These impulses inhibit the production of melatonin. When these impulses stop (at night, when light no longer stimulates the hypothalamus), pineal inhibition ceases and melatonin is released. The pineal gland is therefore a photosensitive organ and an important timekeeper for the human body.

Retinal research done with hamsters demonstrates another center for melatonin production. Located in the retina, this center implies that the eyes have their own built in circadian timepiece. This retinal system is distinct from the brains body clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Biologists found that they could throw the retinal rhythms out of sync with other circadian cycles. They also found that they could set and reset the retinal clock even when the SCN was destroyed.

The retinal clock produces (stimulates the production of?) melatonin. Researchers are now looking for the exact location (s) of this clock in the human eye (and expect to find it). No one yet knows what the separate clock is for or how it relates to the SCN.

In some lower vertebrates the Epiphysis Cerebri – Pineal Gland – has a well-developed eye-like structure; in others though not organized as an eye, if functions as a light receptor. In lower vertebrates, the pineal gland has an eye like structure and it functions as a light receptor and is considered by some to be the evolutionary forerunner of the modern eye.

The gland weighs little more than 0.1 gram. The gland is large in children and begins to shrink with the onset of puberty. It appears to play a major role in sexual development, hibernation in animals, metabolism, and seasonal breeding. In humans it affects circadian rhythms, sleep patterns (melatonin levels increase at night), and is implicated in seasonal affective disorder. The abundant melatonin levels in children is believed to inhibit sexual development. When puberty arrives, melatonin production is reduced.

The pineal gland secretes melanin during times of relaxation and visualization. As we are created by electromagnetic energy – and react to EM energy stimuli around us – so does the pineal gland.

When activated, the pineal gland becomes the line of communication with the higher planes. The crown chakra reaches down until its vortex touches the pineal gland. Prana, or pure energy, is received through this energy center in the head. With Practice the vibration level of the astral body is raised, allowing it to separate from the physical.

To activate the ‘third eye’ and perceive higher dimensions, the pineal gland and the pituitary body must vibrate in unison, which is achieved through meditation and/or relaxation. When a correct relationship is established between personality, operating through the pituitary body, and the soul, operating through the pineal gland, a magnetic field is created. The negative and positive forces interact and become strong enough to create the ‘light in the head.’ With this ‘light in the head’ activated, astral projectors can withdraw themselves from the body, carrying the light with them.

Astral travel, and other occult abilities, are closely associated with the development of the ‘light in the head’. After physical relaxation, concentration upon the pineal gland is achieved by staring at a point in the middle of the forehead. Without straining the muscles of the eye, this will activate the pineal gland and the ‘third eye’. Beginning with the withdrawal of the senses and the physical consciousness, the consciousness is centered in the region of the pineal gland. The perceptive faculty and the point of realization are centralized in the area between the middle of the forehead and the pineal gland. The trick is to visualize, very intently, the subtle body escaping through the trap door of the brain. A popping sound may occur at the time separation of the astral body in the area of the pineal gland.

Visualization exercises are the first step in directing the energies in our inner systems to activate the ‘third eye’. The magnetic field is created around the pineal gland, by focusing the mind on the midway point between the pineal gland and the pituitary body. The creative imagination visualizes something, and the thought energy of the mind gives life and direction to this form.

‘Third eye’ development, imagination, and visualization are important ingredients in many methods to separate from the physical form. Intuition is also achieved through ‘third eye’ development. Knowledge and memory of the astral plane are not registered in full waking consciousness until the intuition becomes strong enough. Flashes of intuition come with increasing consistency as the ‘third eye’ as activated to a greater degree, through practice.

The pineal gland corresponds with divine thought after being touched by the vibrating light of Kundalini. Kundalini starts its ascent towards the head center after responding to the vibrations from the ‘light in the head.’ The light is located at the top of the sutratma, or ‘soul thread’, which passes down from the highest plane of our being into the physical vehicle.

The ‘third eye,’ or ‘eye of Siva,’ the organ of spiritual vision, is intimately related to karma, as we become more spiritual in the natural course of evolution.

As human beings continue to evolve further out of matter, on the journey from spirit to matter back to spirit, the pineal gland will continue to rise from its state of age-long dormancy, bringing back to humanity astral capacities and spiritual abilities.

At certain brainwave frequencies, a sense of ego boundary vanishes. In the theta state, we are resting deeply and still conscious, at the threshold of drifting away from or back into conscious awareness. As the brain enters deeper states, our consciousness is less concerned with the physical state, our ‘third eye’ is active, and separation becomes natural. Many native traditions and mystical practices refer to the ability of ‘seeing,’ or being aware of energy fields at higher levels. This abstract awareness is much more subjective and does not involve the normal level of mundane consciousness, which is mostly concerned with self-identity. This ‘seeing’ refers to the sight of the ‘third eye’.

Consciousness is raised from an emotional nature into an illumined awareness when the pineal gland is lifted from dormancy. If the pineal gland is not yet fully developed, it will be in the course of evolution. When our sense of ego and personality are set aside and we keep our mental energy intact, we can become conscious of the non-physical, our inner self, the subconscious, through different practices to activate the ‘light in the head.’

 

The Pineal Gland and Melatonin

The pineal gland or epiphysis synthesizes and secretes melatonin, a structurally simple hormone that communicates information about environmental lighting to various parts of the body. Ultimately, melatonin has the ability to entrain biological rhythms and has important effects on reproductive function of many animals. The light-transducing ability of the pineal gland has led some to call the pineal the "third eye".

Anatomy of the Pineal Gland

The pineal gland is a small organ shaped like a pine cone (hence its name). It is located on the midline, attached to the posterior end of the roof of the third ventricle in the brain. The pineal varies in size among species; in humans it is roughly 1 cm in length, whereas in dogs it is only about 1 mm long. To observe the pineal, reflect the cerebral hemispheres laterally and look for a small grayish bump in front of the cerebellum. The images below shows the pineal gland of a horse in relation to the brain.

Histologically, the pineal is composed of "pinealocytes" and glial cells. In older animals, the pineal often is contains calcium deposits ("brain sand").

How does the retina transmit information about light-dark exposure to the pineal gland? Light exposure to the retina is first relayed to the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus, an area of the brain well known to coordinate biological clock signals. Fibers from the hypothalamus descend to the spinal cord and ultimately project to the superior cervical ganglia, from which post-ganglionic neurons ascend back to the pineal gland. Thus, the pineal is similar to the adrenal medulla in the sense that it transduces signals from the sympathetic nervous system into a hormonal signal.

Melatonin: Synthesis, Secretion and Receptors

The precursor to melatonin is serotonin, a neurotransmitter that itself is derived from the amino acid tryptophan. Within the pineal gland, serotonin is acetylated and then methylated to yield melatonin.

Synthesis and secretion of melatonin is dramatically affected by light exposure to the eyes. The fundamental pattern observed is that serum concentrations of melatonin are low during the daylight hours, and increase to a peak during the dark.

Examples of the circadian rhythm in melatonin secretion in humans is depicted in the figure to the right (adapted from Vaughn, et al, J Clin Endo Metab 42:752, 1976). The dark gray bars represent night, and serum melatonin levels are shown for two individuals (yellow versus light blue). Note that blood levels of melatonin are essentially undetectable during daytime, but rise sharply during the dark. Very similar patterns are seen in other species.The duration of melatonin secretion each day is directly proportional to the length of the night.

The mechanism behind this pattern of secretion during the dark cycle is that activity of the rate-limiting enzyme in melatonin synthesis – serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) – is low during daylight and peaks during the dark phase. In some species, circadian changes in NAT activity are tightly correlated with transcription of the NAT messenger RNA, while in other species, post-transcriptional regulation of NAT activity is responsible. Activity of the other enzyme involved in synthesis of melatonin from serotonin – the methyltransferase – does not show regulation by pattern of light exposure.

Two melatonin receptors have been identified from mammals (designated Mel1A and Mel1B) that are differentially expressed in different tissues and probably participate in implementing differing biologic effects. These are G protein-coupled cell surface receptors. The highest density of receptors has been found in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus, the anterior pituitary (predominantly pars tuberalis) and the retina. Receptors are also found in several other areas of the brain.

Biological Effects of Melatonin

Melatonin has important effects in integrating photoperiod and affecting circadian rhythms. Consequently, it has been reported to have significant effects on reproduction, sleep-wake cycles and other phenomena showing circadian rhythm.

Effects on Reproductive Function

Seasonal changes in daylength have profound effects on reproduction in many species, and melatonin is a key player in controlling such events. In temperate climates, animals like hamsters, horses and sheep have distinct breeding season. During the non-breeding season, the gonads become inactive (e.g males fail to produce sperm in any number), but as the breeding season approaches, the gonads must be rejuvenated. Photoperiod – the length of day vs night – is the most important cue allowing animals to determine which season it is. As you’ve probably deduced by now, the pineal gland is able to measure daylength and adjust secretion of melatonin accordingly. A hamster without a pineal gland or with a lesion that prevents the pineal from receiving photoinformation is not able to prepare for the breeding season.

The effect of melatonin on reproductive systems can be summarized by saying that it is anti-gonadotropic. In other words, melatonin inhibits the secretion of the gonadotropic hormones luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone from the anterior pituitary. Much of this inhibitory effect seems due to inhibition of gonadotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus, which is necessary for secretion of the anterior pituitary hormones.

One practical application of melatonin’s role in controlling seasonal reproduction is found in its use to artificially manipulate cycles in seasonal breeders. For example, sheep that normally breed only once per year can be induced to have two breeding seasons by treatment with melatonin.

Effects on Sleep and Activity

Melatonin is probably not a major regulator of normal sleep patterns, but undoubtedly has some effect. One topic that has garnered a large amount of interest is using melatonin alone, or in combination with phototherapy, to treat sleep disorders. There is some indication that melatonin levels are lower in elderly insomniacs relative to age matched non-insomniacs, and melatonin therapy in such cases appears modestly beneficial in correcting the problem.

Another sleep disorder is seen in shift workers, who often find it difficult to adjust to working at night and sleeping during the day. The utility of melatonin therapy to aleviate this problem is equivocal and appears not to be as effective as phototherapy. Still another condition involving disruption of circadian rhythms is jet lag. In this case, it has repeatedly been demonstrated that taking melatonin close to the target bedtime of the destination can alleviate symptoms; it has the greatest beneficial effect when jet lag is predicted to be worst (e.g. crossing many time zones).

In various species including humans, administration of melatonin has been shown to decrease motor activity, induce fatigue and lower body temperature, particularly at high doses. The effect on body temperature may play a significant role in melatonin’s ability to entrain sleep-wake cycles, as in patients with jet lag.

Other Effects of Melatonin

One of the first experiments conducted to elucidate the function of the pineal, extracts of pineal glands from cattle were added to water containing tadpoles. Interestingly, the tadpoles responded by becoming very light in color or almost transparent due to alterations in melanin pigment distribution. Although such cutaneous effects of melatonin are seen in a variety of "lower species", the hormone does not have such effects in mammals or birds.

The pineal gland is located near to the center of the brain, between the two hemispheres, tucked in a groove where the two rounded thalamic bodies join. Unlike much of the rest of the brain, the pineal gland is not isolated from the body by the blood-brain barrier system. It is reddish-gray and about the size of a pea (8 mm in humans), located just rostro-dorsal to the superior colliculus and behind and beneath the stria medullaris, between the laterally positioned thalamic bodies. It is part of the epithalamus. It is a midline structure, and is often seen in plain skull X-rays, as it is often calcified. Calcification is typically due to intake of the fluoride found in water and toothpaste. It was the last endocrine gland to have its function discovered.

I’ll be glad when the financial market finally crashes. I hope that you’ll take that time to release any greed that lingers within. The financial market as we know it must go and yet I feel that so many of you are clinging on to the financial market as it stands, even though it drains you of your life force, time and energy.

THE FINANCIAL SYSTEM AS WE KNOW IT, IS BUT A MEMORY The financial system as we know it, is like a building crashing in slow motion….the building no longer stands even though it appears to be that way. Those with eyes to see, can see in slow motion…frame-by-frame. There is nothing left to to save a building that is already in freefall…you simply get out of the way and practice acceptance.

YOU MUST BE WILLING TO STORE FOOD AND WATER
I’m not suggesting that you live in fear….I believe the financial system will be changing for the better, because humanity is attracting the possibility to itself. However if we are to live through the changeover…we must be willing to accept that banks will close, and shelves may empty and that money will take on a whole new meaning, as it should.
